After,
After, 1997, video, 16 min.
The video works of Jasmila Žbanič are strongly marked by the
experience of the war in Bosnia which, even after its end,
still affects the society and the individual fates of people.
After, After is a video about a young girl named Belma Katica,
a first-grader who survived two and a half years in the occupied
territory of eastern Bosnia. Traumatized and speechless, the
girls comes to Sarajevo, where she tries to adapt among her
peers, who are also traumatized by war. "What are you afraid
of?" is the question the artist poses to the children, warning
that precisely because of their answers, the war lives on
in their psyches.
