Klagenfurt u. A, 2'00, 2000, installation
"… while initially the buoys introduce the exhibition
like signposts (- possible confusion), "Block F" - a bulky
container - evokes a situation of extreme confinement. Photographs
that allow a glimpse of the construction technique together
with central passage of Bachmann's "Jordanischer Zeit", a
novel about a fatal relationship of increasing hopelessness,
provoke permanent alternation between interior and exterior
views…". (Sabine B. Vogel) Manfred Pernice's large-scale installation
for Manifesta 3 takes possession of the room in which it is
exhibited. His architectural installation and sculptural arrangement
direct the viewer, occasionally leading in an unexpected direction,
and hardly leaving place from him to walk around. The installation
influence the proportions and, despite their provisional character,
have an intensely physical presence, determining how the viewer
experiences a room. Manfred Pernice covers the surfaces of
the installation with fragments of text by the writer Ingeborg
Bachmann, with small collages and photographs. Text describing
emotional conditions of a contemporary man open the 'reading'
of sculptures for unexpected associations.
